Mortgage stress test calculator
In Canada, lenders check that you could still afford your payment at a higher rate. See the rate you'll be tested at and the payment that decides how much you can borrow.
Enter the rate you've been quoted. Not an offer.
Enter an interest rate to see the result.
How this tool works
- Qualifying rate = the greater of your contract rate + 2% or 5.25% (OSFI minimum qualifying rate for uninsured mortgages, page modified 2026-01-29; the same test applies to insured mortgages).
- You pay your contract rate. The higher rate is only used to check your debt-service ratios.
- An uninsured straight switch to another federally regulated lender at renewal doesn't need the test (OSFI, from 2024-11-21).
Rules checked 2026-10-23. Estimates only, not an offer or advice; a licensed broker confirms the numbers and every mortgage is subject to lender approval. Everything is calculated in your browser. The amounts you type are never sent to us.
Questions about the stress test tool
Do I pay the stress-test rate?
No. You pay the rate in your contract. The stress-test rate is only used to work out whether you can afford the mortgage.
Does the stress test apply when I refinance?
Yes. A refinance or a HELOC means qualifying again at the stress-test rate.
Do credit unions apply it?
The OSFI rule binds federally regulated lenders. Ontario credit unions set their own qualifying rules, often similar. Ask us which lenders apply what.
